What is the Swiss Travel Pass?
Swiss Travel Pass is a single ticket that allows tourists residing outside of Switzerland and Liechtenstein to travel unlimitedly within Switzerland by train, bus, and boat for a set number of days, and, also, offers free or discounted access to over 500 museums and other attractions.
Note: Seat reservations are required for some premium trains and are not included with the pass.
Which Swiss Travel Pass should I choose for my trip?
On Trainline, you can choose from three main Swiss Travel Pass types: Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex and Swiss Half-fare card.
- You should choose Swiss Travel Pass if you’re planning to travel multiple days in a row as this pass type allows you to use 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 consecutive days.
- Swiss Travel Pass Flex is the most flexible option as you can use your travel days at any time within 1-month period.
- If you are not ready to commit to a certain number of travel days, you can choose Swiss Half-fare card, which allows you travel with a 50% discount any time within 1-month period.
If you prefer to travel in style, you might want to opt for a 1st class Pass. If you're looking for a low-cost option, 2nd class is the more affordable option
Are there discounts for children and young people?
- Children under 6 years old travel for free.
- Children between 6 and 16 years old traveling with a parent can travel for free with a Swiss Family Card, provided that at least one parent holds a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half-Fare Card.
- Children not traveling with a parent can get a 50% discount on a Swiss Travel Pass.
- Young people under 25 years old can purchase a Swiss Travel Pass with a 30% discount.
How do I activate my Swiss Travel Pass?
If you’re purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass (with consecutive travel days), you will receive your pass in a PDF format and will be able to use it straight away - no need to activate it.
If you’re purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass Flex, you will receive a receipt via email. However, the receipt itself is not a valid travel document. You will need to activate each travel day via activateyourpass.com before starting any journey. Any information you might need to activate a travel day will be on your receipt.
When are my travel days valid with a Swiss Travel Pass Flex?

Each travel day is valid until 5.00am the following morning.
An activated travel day can be deactivated before 11.59pm on the day before the validity period. An activated day cannot be deactivated on the date of travel. An e-ticket is issued for every activated Flex Day. This ticket may be downloaded at any time from activateyourpass.com as a mobile ticket, printed at home or added as your wallet ticket and must be shown at the ticket gates or to train staff.
When is my pass valid from?
The Swiss Travel Pass is valid from midnight on the start date of your trip. For example, if you buy a 4-day pass with a start date of 24 July, the pass will be valid from 00:00 on 24 July and will expire at 5am. on 28 July. The last trip must be completed by 5am.
What is included in my Swiss Travel Pass?
The Swiss Travel Pass includes travel on trains, buses, and boats, even on premium panoramic trains such as the Glacier Express (note: seat reservations are mandatory and not included).
You’ll also get:
- Free entry to more than 500 museums
- 50% discount on most mountain railways
- Free public transportation in more than 90 Swiss cities
- Up to 50% off mountain railways, cable cars, e-bike rentals at train stations, and RailAway combined offers for many tourist attractions
How can I reserve my seats on panoramic trains?
Seat reservations are required on most panoramic trains. This leads to additional costs (price varies depending on the provider). Travel on panoramic trains is included in the Swiss Travel Pass, you only have to pay for the seat reservation. Reservations can generally be made at the earliest three months before the trip. Seat reservations can be made directly on SBB website.
How can I request a refund on my Swiss Travel Pass?
To request a refund, please contact us and ensure you meet the following conditions:
- All Swiss rail passes are fully refundable if cancelled before the first day of validity.
- Lost or stolen passes are not eligible for refund or replacement.
- Partial refunds may be granted after the start date only in cases of illness or accident, with official documentation.
Swiss Travel Pass
Fully refundable if unused and cancelled before the start date. Once the pass is valid, it is no longer refundable unless travel is interrupted due to illness or accident.
Swiss Travel Pass Flex
Same refund policy as the regular Swiss Travel Pass. Fully refundable if cancelled before the first day of use.
Swiss Half Fare Card
Fully refundable if cancelled before the first day of validity.
